I have been fortunate enough to participate in ten of Alison’s moon gatherings over the past three years, and each gathering has not only expanded my horizon of perception but also clarified my intentions and focalized my actions. On the one hand, Alison generously invites participants into the presence of her First Nations’ ancestors in ways that quietly seem to carry participants inside the “all my relations” circle of interconnectivity that is so central to her community. I think that by inviting us to sit with her and her ancestors inside this circle, Alison lets us see our lives and struggles from a liberating vantage beyond the confines of western hierarchal binaries (of self v. other, for instance). In some ways, this process seems a bit like a psycho-spiritual massage: simply spending two hours inside Alison’s “circle” seems to loosen the tighter psychic knots that have led to a lot of suffering throughout my daily life. In other ways, however, this process seems more like an existential chiropractic adjustment: engaging in Alison’s verbal and written exercises enables participants to articulate their knottier life challenges, to re-align themselves in relation to these challenges, and to clarify their intentions in light of this re-alignment. I have left almost every one of Alison’s moon gatherings with a clearer sense of where I’ve been getting off track and how I can get back to where and how I want to be.
